"Houston We Have A Problem"
7th manned mission from Kennedy Space Center.
The NASA program and U.S. didn't think much about the mission because we have already been to the moon twice.
During testing oxygen tank 2 didn't empty right before the launch. The oxygen tank 2 was damaged while being removed from Apollo 10 for repairs.
A day before launch they had to manually empty the tank.
5 1/2 minutes into the flight the crew felt a vibration.
No one watched their broadcast because, it was "routine."
56 hours after launch they heard a loud bang 200,000 miles from earth's surface. They thought a meteoroid hit their shuttle, didn't think much about it but it was serious. There was an explosion in one of the oxygen tanks, causing the wires to short circuit.
Booooooooom!!!!!!!!!
They saw the oxygen leaking out into space, that's when they knew it was serious.
That's when they said, "HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM."
"The Return Trip"
Then they were forced to trade computer information to the lunar module, where they stayed for 6 day.
While they were up the, lunar module pilot, Fred Haise got very sick from the extreme cold in the lunar module. The only way to get them home was to sling shot them around the moon using the moon's gravity. That would save the boosters that would give them the exact angle so they wouldn't ricochet off of earth's atmosphere or burn up going in to steep.
Now the whole world was watching and waiting!
After getting slung around the moon, the crew let go of the command module. You would never guess what they saw.

They saw a big hole in the side of the command module. They were worried that there wasn't enough blast shields to survive reentry.
A routine reentry usually has a 3 minute blackout, which means no radio communication. If they don't hear from them within 3 minutes they either burned up in the atmosphere or they bounced off of the atmosphere. After 3 minutes they hadn't heard from them ,they waited, and after 4 minutes 15 seconds they got a radio signal saying they made had it. This mission became known as the "SUCCESSFUL FAILURE" for getting them back down from space, but they never got to touch the moon.
